Maths and English are the foundations of the National Curriculum in England. Maths is the root of science, technology and engineering and is essential for every-day life – e.g. to understand money. Key Stage Maths also tries to foster enjoyment of the subject and to understand that mathematics is not just about numbers but also has an inherent beauty.
Purpose & Aims
The purpose of the maths curriculum is for a child to become fluent in the fundamentals of maths, to be able to understand and reason in the mathematical symbols and language, and to be able to solve problems including those which require analysis and multiple steps to work out.
Spoken Maths
It is important for a child to develop and be able to speak in the language of mathematics. Specifically to be able to reason verbally so a teacher or other student can understand their reasoning.
